CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Asch the Bloody (originally Luke fon Fabre)
Age: 17
Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Canon Point: Eldrant; just after losing to Luke.
Character Information: Asch at Aselia Wikia.
Personality: To start this off bluntly, Asch is an ass.
The first time you hear Asch, he's angry, and this is pretty much his state of mind for the majority of Tales of the Abyss. Granted, the majority of his anger is entirely justified, given the circumstances of his life: being told he would be a king only to find out he was destined to die before that would happen, being replaced by an inferior copy of himself and witnessing his own parents not even question it, finding out the man that saved him from his destined fate was lying to him too... Asch has a lot to be pissed off about. Unfortunately he tends to take that anger out on whatever target is in front of him, whether it's in the form of open hostility or scathing sarcasm. Usually it's someone deserving of having their behind handed to them, but many times it's Luke that gets the majority of Asch's rage. Not even Natalia (his former fiance and the woman that he still very clearly loves) is safe from his biting sarcasm, though she does receive the least of his ire. He also has a tendency to be painfully blunt to the point of being outright rude, and that in addition to his stubbornness makes him seem unyielding and largely unforgiving. This attitude makes him, in general, wholly unpleasant to be around, and very few characters in the game can actually stand to be around him for very long, and the number of people that can actually counteract his crappy behavior can be counted on one hand.
Perhaps it isn't much of a surprise given his general attitude, but Asch is very much a loner by nature. Most times he's seen in Tales of the Abyss, he's going off and doing his own thing. Even when the party bumps into him, he barely gives them enough to go by as far as what he is doing before going off on his own. Later on he's found more in the company of the Dark Wings, but their relationship is clearly "the boss" and "the hired hands", and there is little companionship between the two. Despite this stoic and standoffish approach to working and cooperating with others, however, he is apparently an amazing leader figure. NPC dialogue with Oracle Knights in Daath reveal that the men under Asch's command in the Oracle Knights' special forces have a great respect for him as their leader. This is most likely due to the fact that, despite his fate to die being known, he was raised as a future king up until the point he was kidnapped.
Despite that noble background, it doesn't keep him from being a manipulative ass. He pulls the strings of his own fellow God Generals, talking Dist, Sync, and Arietta into capturing Luke, and further manipulating Dist into opening Luke's synchronous fon slots. The reason for this? So he could further manipulate Luke, and he parades the fact that he can do so, going so far as to make Luke pull his sword on Tear. This part of him tones down quite a bit after Akzeriuth falls and he carries Luke's consciousness in his head for awhile, but it's not something that's gone completely.
It's important to consider Luke when it comes to Asch. He doesn't hate Luke per say, but you would not be able to tell by the way he acts around him. He is constantly putting Luke down, acting more like a bully toward him than anyone else, and it's like he makes it his personal goal to make sure Luke knows it when he screws up. He never calls him by name, instead preferring to call him either "dreck" (when he's especially pissed) or "replica" (when he's not). It's very clear in all his interactions with his replica that he has trouble separating "replica Luke" from "original Luke"; as in, he expects his replica to act like the "Luke" Asch himself was before he had been kidnapped. There are times he comes off as contradictory because of this, as he will be pissed off at Luke for not being more of his own person, but then later be pissed off at him for not being more like he originally was, sometimes within the same conversation. Luke will never be that person, just as much as Asch will never be that individual again, and it takes him until his canon point for Asch to finally accept that the person he was no longer exists.
In spite of the many negative qualities that Asch has developed over the years, he does retain some of the parts of him that were "Luke". He is still devoted to his country and Natalia, and even though he says he can never have either of those again, he goes out of his way to protect both. He's there to catch Natalia when she falls, and there to save her when her own father turns against her. He risks his life to destroy the miasma, knowing very well that on his own he will die in what he needs to do to accomplish such a monumental task. His bullheaded stubbornness helps him see what he wants to accomplish through to the very end, even though there are times when he needs to stop and he doesn't listen, resulting in someone needing to hold him down.
What is probably his most endearing trait, however, is that he can be very kind. He will deny it repeatedly if it's pointed out to him, but it doesn't change the fact that some of the things he does are out of the best of intentions, even if accidentally. When his mother falls ill and the medicine she needs is not available by the usual means, he's already at the forest where the mushrooms needed for it grow, ready to go in by himself if need be and get them for her. He even extends his kindness to Guy -- whom he has every right to be angry with -- telling him where to find Luke at when they split up. Supplementary material show him being gentle in dealing with Arietta, and even with Mieu, despite the fact that the little cheagle is annoying is likely the only thing him and his replica agree on.
Asch has many, many flaws, and while the reasons for his terrible attitude is entirely justified, it still makes him a largely unpleasant person to be around. Still, there is a bit of a soft side to him; it may not appear very often, but it is there if people can find it.
